Every once in a while the minds appetite for progression bites off more then the body can handle. I watched from behind the comfort of my lens as Kelend sailed too deep causing his Patrol's suspension to completely bottom out. It was in the blink of an eye that his bike savagely flung him to the ground, his lifeless body tumbling through bowling ball sized boulders. I ran towards him and it was then that I realized the gravity of the situation. There he lie motionless on the ground, gurgling at the mouth with arms rigid and hands grasping at the sky. His eyes were rolled back in his head and thick dark red blood began pouring from his brow and the brim of his helmet. Getting knocked out is part of the game but it was the blood from the dome that had me uneasy. It was also the fact that it was just him and I and Rob on the side of a mountain that seemed a million miles from Nowhere,BC. We were completely alone. What the f*ck were we going to do. Just like that I looked up and saw our knight in shining armor sweep down and take control of the situation. I had forgot about our tail guide, Brian Malley, who stayed back with us to make sure everyone stayed safe. Like a hawk he flew in, shifted gears into first aid assessment mode and took control of the scene. That's the advantage of guided backcountry mountain biking at Retallack. You always have an angel watching over your shoulder. Luckily for us that day too I had driven down one of the trucks from the zone we were building trail and we were able to quickly extract the dazed and confused Kelend down the miles of logging road back to the Lodge. Brian monitored him all night to make sure he was not taking a turn for the worse which can happen from brain bruising. Pretty crazy times at a pretty crazy place. Helmets really do save lives. They are disposable after impact. People aren't. @kelendh @robkunch @digidozer @treelines_northwest @retallacklodge @bellbikehelmets #mtb #nodignoride #getrad #explorebc #tbt #eatingsalametakingpictures #freehubmagwhoweare
