HWY 395 Revisited A Super 8 Film from Brian Vernor

When Brian Vernor learned that White Mountain was the inaugural home of the Kamikaze Downhill, not Mammoth Mountain, he decided a pilgrimage to the area was necessary. With a few friends and a Super 8 camera, Brian set out to explore one of the earliest homes of our sport. Enjoy.

The Eastern Sierras called out for a end-of-Summer road trip, so myself, Chris McNally and Moi Medina headed out of Los Angeles to score a few final trail days just as the first snows were dropping.

Growing up on the legends of the Kamikaze Downhill, and the Sierra 7500' mountain bike races I was fascinated to learn that before the Kamikaze hit the slopes of Mammoth Mountain, it lived for two years South and across the valley on White Mountain. The race ran from the area known as Sherman Grove, and dropped 6,000' along Silver Canyon Road. As a pilgrimage we went out and rode the area, not following the old tracks exactly, but exploring the mountains and vibe which inspired the early days of mountain biking.
