Sedona, AZ, – Jan 8 2013: Sedona mountain biking takes a huge step forward with the Forest Service approval of the Hangover Trail. Known for its jaw dropping views, slickrock steeps, and exposed traverses; the Hangover Trail is a perfect showcase of Sedona's unique terrain. The Forest Service decision to make this trail official is viewed as a tipping point for mountain bike advocacy and Forest Service land management.
Originally built by mountain bikers more than 6 years ago, the Hangover trail has long been under the radar as a social trail. Without any trail markings or signage, route finding was almost entirely local knowledge. “Hangover Trail is one of those trails that is just so dramatic and unique, you want to share it,” says Jason Firsty, owner of the Over the Edge Bike Shop, “But without legit trail markings, its just too much route finding to safely send visitors out there. Its going to be really great to have signage and markings on the slickrock out there.”
“The Red Rock Ranger District recognizes mountain biking as a legitimate trail use, and is working to expand trail opportunities for mountain biking along with other trail uses,” said Jennifer Burns, District Recreation Manager. The Hangover Trail is a testament to the fact that sustainable legal trails can also be extremely technical and rewarding for bikers and hikers alike.
The trails approval and trail work has been pushed forward by the local advocacy group, the Verde Valley Cyclists Coalition. “It has taken a lot of work and cooperation, but it is great to see this finally coming together,” said Lars Romig, president of the VVCC, “Being a relatively new user group, its taken a long time to be fully recognized. The more that mountain bikers can cooperate with the Forest Service, the more successes we will see like the Hangover Trail.” And just like that view off of Hangover saddle, the sky is the limit for Sedona mountain biking.
