Mullen at home... in the woods! Photo by Colin Wiseman

We would go huck off sketchy rock drops and wood work that we would build, seeing who could do the biggest drop...

The dust slowly starts to settle as the fans and athletes make their way down the rocky and sandy cliffs of the southern Utah desert. The music is pumping and the Red Bull is flowing like water. The celebration has started with high fives and congratulations all around. There are feelings of relief and excitement in the air. Stoked fans grabbing autographs while exhausted athletes taking in the feats that have been accomplished in the past few days. All the attention now turns to the podium; the winners are being announced. In third place, Darren “The Claw” Berrecloth, in second place is World Cup racer, Gee Atherton, and the winner of 2010 Red Bull Rampage is Cam Zink. And the crowd goes wild. As well as winning the event, Zink has also taken home the Best Trick category for his massive 360 off the Oakley icon sender.

Glenwood Springs, Colorado from Gear Exchange
words by Linden Carlson

The seemingly sleepy little towns of western Colorado have come onto the scene over the past couple years; they are now known for having prime single track hidden neatly away, just out of sight, tucked in the hills somewhere outside city limits. I mean, we are in the Rockies! Why wouldn’t there be great mountain biking scattered amongst all the other great mountain related activities? After all, that’s the point of living up here. If you have a lifestyle of playing your favorite game, then you tend to live where that game can be played. So here I am, living life on two wheels in Glenwood Springs.

A few weeks ago, I was looking for another place to ride. Something new, single-trackie, closer to the shop and with “expansion potential” (because trail work is fun).

Since we opened, we’ve had some local customers mention a now extinct XC race series which used to be held at a local ski area, Gunstock Mountain Resort. This makes sense ‘cuz Gunstock is a popular local winter gathering for downhill and xc skiers. Worth the 10 minute ride over there to have a look around? Heck yeah.

If you have ever spent time deep in the mountains then you know that the only sounds are the wind and the noise of your own tracks, but when that mountain speaks it speaks loudly. The roar of an avalanche or the bottomless rumbles of rock fall shatter the near silence with a exclamation mark of raw power. If you are in the mountains and you hear any of the sounds of the mountain cataclysm then you stop, you stop dead in your paces and pay attention.

There are some things that I just love about mountain biking; riding under tall trees with ferns and singletrack that keeps your attention with a variety of features. It just puts a smile on my face.

The location of the art barn, and the beginning of the middle of this story, which would be like skipping  to Temple of Doom or Back to the Future 2. However Our Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Back To The Future 1, is way to convoluted of a story for this article, so here are the Cole’s Notes:

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Inspired by the wild freedom of South American street art, Micayla Gatto’s artwork directly reflects how she perceives the world; as an energetic, colourful, and intertwined space for imagination and creativity to thrive. As a professional World Cup bike racer, Micayla’s work also reflects her experiences while touring the world racing her bike.

“You’re going to come off a little jump to the right, then there’ll be a berm to the left and then a berm to the right. After that, there are three wall rides and then, a big box that you can air up onto and off of. I’ll wait by the box and watch you all go by.”

A LOOK BACK, AND AHEAD, AT THE STORY OF THE INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN BICYCLING ASSOCIATION

Words by Mark Eller

The world’s first bicycles were mountain bikes. Because very few roads were paved in the 19th century when bicycles were introduced in Europe and then in the U.S., they were usually ridden on dirt roads and trails.
